Shiftsmart is a gig app that allows workers, which they call partners, to perform a variety of duties during 4 hour shifts. The company is headquartered in Dallas, Texas but offers shifts all over the country. Shiftsmart offers a variety of shifts including survey calling, customer service phone reps, retail merchandising and cleaning roles. They also offer delivery driver, secret shopper and tech product tester shifts among others. I have been working as a partner with Shiftsmart for almost a year. I have completed a variety of the jobs they offer and the following is my review of the platform.

To date most of the shifts that I have completed have been as a retail merchandiser                                                   (glorified stocker) and cleaner, so that is where this review is focused.

All of Shiftsmart’s gigs are offered through their app, which is available in the app store.                                            Their onboarding process is very simple and it doesn’t take much to enroll as a partner. You will need to provide basic information such as your name, address and social security number, which is used to provide you with a 1099 at the end of the year. You will also have to provide banking information so that you can be paid.

You will not be an employee of Shiftsmart or the company that you work for, you are considered an independent contractor, therefore there are no taxes taken out of your pay.

Shiftsmart does do a basic background check which you will have to agree to in order                                            to work on their platform. Once you have entered your personal information into the                                            app, it will show you available trainings and shifts in your area. Some of the training is                                  provided via zoom calls and some of it is a self-paced training that you do yourself.                                              The type of training will depend on the role that you are applying for.

Once you have completed the necessary training for your position, you are ready to accept your first shift. The app will populate with available shifts in your area and accepting a shift is as easy as pressing the accept key. Once a shift is accepted you can cancel it up to 24 hours prior to the beginning of the shift. If you cancel it after that, Shiftsmart will reprimand you by limiting shifts available to you or removing you from that particular assignment.

When it is time to complete your shift you simply check in through the app which is as simple as taking a picture of yourself in front of the store and then entering a code that is provided to you by an employee on site. Then you complete your shift and get another code to end your shift.

In my experience it takes about 24 hours to receive your pay from Shiftsmart. Shiftsmart must verify your hours with management at the location that the work was done prior to paying you. Once it has been verified, you will receive your payment through the app and have the option to have it immediately transferred to your bank account (for a $1.99 fee) or to wait for the weekly direct deposit to your bank which is free.

One thing that I like about Shiftsmart is that everything is done through their app. All the training, scheduling and receiving payment is handled through the app.

One thing that I don’t like about Shiftsmart is that everything is handled through thier app. All the customer service related to scheduling, payments, technical issues, etc. is also done through the app. I have had to contact them about a couple of issues in the past and it has been my experience that they take awhile to respond to anything. So, if you have an issue while on site working, the chances of getting it handled quickly is not likely. They do provide access to a toll-free customer service line that you can call, however the times that I have called I have been on hold for infinity.

I have never had an issue with pay. I have always been paid timely and correctly and I have never had an issue transferring my pay out of the app into my bank account.

Some of the things that I like about Shiftsmart are:

  • Everything can be done through the app

  • Jobs are easy and they pay quickly

  • Great for someone who can work with little supervision

  • Obtain new job skills

  • Flexible schedules

Some of the things that I don’t like about Shiftsmart are:

  • Customer Service is non-existent

  • The app can be glitchy at times making it difficult to log in for a shift

  • Limited or no shifts available in rural areas

Overall, Shiftsmart is a pretty good gig for a side hustle. You will probably not get rich working for them, but it can put some extra money in your pocket when you need it. It is a nice little side gig for the self-starters out there who don’t need constant supervision. If you want to give them a try you can click here.
